MEANING
This refers to the upper class (posh) people in society.
TRANSLATION
Die obere Schicht.
wörtlich: Die obere Kruste.
ORIGIN
This term refers to the 19th century when bakers made bread which was very hard on the bottom but much softer at the top. The poorer people would be given the bottom part of the loaf as it was harder to eat, while the softer upper part was given to the rich.
